I photograph people with the eye of a photographer and the instincts of a communicator.

I am Karl Emerick Hanuska, an Amsterdam-based portrait and editorial photographer. My work centres on people: leaders, performers, artists, teams and individuals whose presence deserves to be seen with clarity and character.
My photography is informed by more than three decades in journalism, senior communications roles and leadership environments. I have worked with complex organisations and public-facing leaders in situations where clarity, timing and trust matter. Those experiences taught me how to listen, read a room and recognise what a person or organisation is trying to communicate.
I know that a strong image must be visually compelling, but also useful. It may need to carry a profile, support an editorial story, build confidence in a leader, bring a team together or communicate the energy of a live moment.
The working relationship
Authored, but not imposed.
My approach is collaborative and clearly directed. I do not arrive with a fixed idea of who someone should be. I prepare carefully, create a strong visual framework and guide the process, while making space for the person in front of the camera to influence what we make. The most successful portraits feel authored, but not imposed.
I work from a private portrait studio in central Amsterdam, throughout the Netherlands and on selected international assignments.

Personal and artistic work
A place to explore identity, presence and belonging in greater depth.
My independent artistic practice gives me space to explore identity, presence and belonging in greater depth. That work brings additional depth to the way I approach commissioned portraiture.
